Water in the City

Water infrastructure works best when it is visible, distributed, and part of the everyday landscape.

Urban water is usually hidden until something goes wrong. Storm drains overflow, basements flood, and a dry summer reveals how much of the landscape has been paved over. The alternative is to treat water as part of the design: surfaces that absorb rain, channels that slow it down, and public spaces that can hold it temporarily.

The shift is not only technical. It changes who maintains the system and how people understand it. A rain garden at the edge of a parking lot is a small piece of infrastructure, but it is also a visible reminder that the street has to work with the weather rather than against it.
