Street Trees and Shade

A tree canopy changes how a street feels and how long a walk remains comfortable.

Street trees do many jobs at once. They soften noise, slow traffic, catch dust, and make a walk possible on a hot day. Their shade is not a decorative extra; it determines whether some people can use the sidewalk at all. In neighborhoods with fewer trees, the difference shows up in heat, health, and the simple willingness to go outside.

Planting is the easy part. Keeping trees alive takes coordination: soil volume, water during dry spells, careful pruning, and protection from construction. A city that treats trees as furniture will replace them endlessly. A city that treats them as infrastructure will budget for their care the same way it budgets for pipes and pavement.
