The First Programmers

Before there were computers to run, there were people imagining what instructions could make them do.

The first programmers worked at the edge of the possible. Some wrote for machines that existed only on paper; others translated mathematical procedures into the physical settings of relays and switches. Their work required both precision and imagination, because the boundary between what the machine was and what it might become was still being negotiated.

What stands out in their notes is the attention to language. They described loops, variables, and sequences before those ideas had settled names. Programming emerged not as a single invention but as a way of writing down intentions carefully enough that a machine could follow them.
